With coronavirus case numbers steadily rising, it seems certain that remote working will remain a reality for thousands of Portuguese people in the months ahead. Infections continue to increase, particularly in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley.

That is precisely where many Portuguese companies have their offices, including web design businesses and others in IT consultancy, which have chosen to let their staff work remotely.

If you are also working from home, take a look at these ten tips we have put together to help reduce the impact of this sudden change brought about by COVID-19.

1: Get a powerful computer

Our first tip is an obvious one. If your computer cannot handle all your daily tasks without driving you up the wall, consider buying a new one. Whether you choose a MacBook Pro, one of Lenovo's new models or a Microsoft Surface, think about what you need most from a laptop and pick the right product for you and your role in the company.

2: Find somewhere else to work

One of the keys to successfully working from home is being able to leave the house now and then. Of course, during the pandemic it will be a little harder to work on that seaside terrace or in your favourite café. But look for somewhere you feel comfortable with the safety measures and can open your laptop. Your creativity, and your overall mood, will thank you.

3: Choose a good keyboard

When choosing your new laptop or PC, always pay attention to the keyboard. It should be ergonomic and comfortable, and several models will certainly help you type faster. Your productivity should increase as a result.

4: Stop sending messages from your phone

There is no reason to pick up your mobile to send messages when you are working from home. If you use Apple devices, the Messages app is useful for sending texts. You can also use WhatsApp on your computer or through the web. The choice is yours, but whatever you do, do not pick up your phone: you risk getting distracted, and you will type much faster on your computer.

5: Set an alarm to remind you to stop working

Pay particular attention to how many hours you have been working. In the comfort of your own home, it is easy to go beyond a reasonable limit, and even your health could suffer. So set an alarm on your phone to stop and switch off!

6: Pay attention to the light in your home

Lighting affects our lives and how comfortable we feel. Make the most of sunlight, which is great for productivity, and remember to light your workspace well on darker days. Your computer screen's brightness matters too: adjust it as the day goes on.

7: Get up now and then

It is what we call "stretching your legs". As well as giving you a short break, it is good for your back and your overall physical wellbeing. Use these moments to drink some water and correct your posture. Try this: whenever you need to make a phone call, do it standing up.

8: Eat a healthy diet

One of the main ingredients of success has a lot to do with what you eat. At home, it is very tempting to reach for sugary foods and snacks for energy. However, these are foods you should avoid. Choose small, healthy snacks instead, and do not skip meals!

9: Keep your planner up to date

This may be the simplest way to make sure you do not forget any tasks. Even the smallest, most insignificant ones: write them down! As well as helping you plan them better by thinking them through as you write, this gives you a short break and a change of routine.

10: Use a whiteboard

Use a whiteboard to stick up notes, leave reminders of things you must not forget, jot down ideas or simply do some more visual brainstorming. Even on a Zoom conference call, all your colleagues will be able to see what you have drawn on the board.
