Every good designer has used at least one of the secrets we are about to reveal.

Even if you do not work in graphic design and are simply looking for ideas or inspiration, these tips will help you head in the right direction.

Secret 1

Lines are one of the simplest visual elements, but you should never underestimate them. They can support an entire visual composition by adding structure and framing, dividing information, creating hierarchies and emphasis, decorating or drawing the eye to a particular point. They can be straight, curved, solid, irregular, thin or thick.

Colour is the second key visual element. It falls into the following categories: - Primary colours - Secondary colours - Tertiary colours - Warm and cool colours

Depending on the effect they want to achieve, designers use colour schemes they know will work. These act as guidelines, taking the context and theme into account.

They are: - Monochromatic – balanced and easy on the eye - Analogous – also balanced, but more eye-catching - Complementary – high contrast, visually exciting - Triadic - vibrant

Secret 3

Shapes have two dimensions, measured by height and width. They can be defined by the lines that outline them and the colour that fills them, and can be created using negative space.

In graphic design, shapes are divided into geometric and organic.

Secret 4

Like shapes, textures are also defined by their lines, colour or negative space.

There are two types of texture: organic and geometric. Both people and nature produce textures, as we can see in the images.
