Danny Sullivan, Google's public face for search, confirmed this week on Twitter that the technology giant has updated its algorithm again.

The official statement In short, Google confirmed in a tweet that:

1. The algorithm has changed; 2. The change has a major impact; 3. These changes improve how the search engine shows relevant results to users; 4. Websites that have dropped in the rankings have not done so because they are poor quality.

In just a few characters, the US company also explains that it makes these updates several times a year. This one in particular, though, could mean a real win for websites relegated to the second and third pages of search results.

In a further comment, Danny Sullivan reiterated that there is no fault to fix, a position the company itself had already taken.

"We have lots of things to do. Improve site speed. Consider security. (...) But this update is not about that. It is about reach," he wrote. Google's search representative also said that anyone wanting to improve with this change needs great content. "Yes, the same boring answer. But if you want an idea of what good content is, read our raters' guidelines," he explained.

Sullivan also said that raters have no influence over the algorithm. "It's like having someone review your restaurant. But those people don't go into the kitchen to cook the food," he explained.

What the March tweet means

Google's announcement back in March highlighted the difference between daily improvements in specific areas and this significant update, which changes the whole algorithm.

Essentially, at the start of this year, the company explained that a drop in rankings did not mean there was something to fix on the affected website. "There is nothing wrong with pages that are now performing less well. Instead, changes to our system are benefiting websites that were previously disadvantaged," Google wrote on Twitter.

An opportunity not to miss

This is the ideal time to improve your content and your website's SEO. In other words, with or without algorithm changes, you should always have good writing and images to show your customers.

If you run a search and the results seem strange, study them. If your website has dropped in the rankings, remember that this can still change, but keep investing in content quality. Look at the competitors ranking above you too, and try to understand why they have overtaken you.
